Salvia Apiana, California White Sage aka BUFFALO SAGE
This is our primary product; grown, cared for, harvested and dried as it has always been. Our plants grow on a mountaintop and are harvested with the proper Ceremony, thanking the Earth for her gift and the plant for her medicine.
Our Buffalo Sage is available in two main formats: loose or bundled. Traditionally, Buffalo Sage is used in the loose format for Ceremony – burning only a few small leaves at a time by hand, or in a small container like an Abalone Shell. The bundled “wands” are wrapped in prayers and may be burned as is, or smaller pieces broken off as needed.
Sage should smoulder, not burn with a full flame. Loose Sage will burn until it’s done… Never run your sage bundle under water; either keep a small container of natural (dry) sand handy to snuff it out, or simply place it in a bowl and let it burn out naturally.
While many people are familiar with Buffalo Sage for Smudging ceremonies, few remember that this is medicine and like most traditional medicines, is multi-use. Sage is often referred to as “Indian Aspirin” – headaches, tooth pain, digestive or circulatory problems, breathing issues (cough, asthma, bronchitis) and many other ailments can be alleviated by making a tea with the leaves (or adding to a good green tea for added benefit). Drinking Sage detoxifies and cleanses your system – just as burning it cleanses and detoxifies the air. Scientific studies have corroborated ancient knowledge – Sage is a great natural source of flavonoids and polyphenols, giving it powerful antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
